The program was created to motivate students to explore the fields of science and technology. Based in Manchester, New Hampshire, the non-profit public charity designs accessible, innovative programs that motivate young people to pursue education career opportunities in science, technology, engineering, and math, while building self-confidence, knowledge, and life skills. FIRST is composed of several programs including the following:
- Junior FIRST LEGO League (Grades K-3)
- FIRST LEGO League (Grades 4-8)
- FIRST Tech Challenge (Grades 7-12)
- FIRST Robotics Competition (Grades 9-12)

Each program is designed to help sequentially advance students from the age of 5 to 18 in the skills and ideas of math and science. The programs also equips students with ideas and knowledge regarding community, outreach, business, finance, and much more, encouraging teams to extend and excel in areas far outside of FIRST‘s reach. The program is designed to create a worldwide community where science and technology are celebrated as well as one where young people inspire to become the next leaders.
